Join us at Kids Therapy Co (179615 Main Street, Whitmore Lake, MI) for a series of immersive and hands-on read aloud activities, aimed to foster a love of books, boost early language skills, and provide families with practical tips for teaching early speech, language and literacy skills at home. All activities are led by a licensed speech-language therapist and incorporate evidence based speech-language acquisition strategies. Activities are designed for both neurotypical and neurodiverse learners, ages ranging from 2-8 years, accompanied by their grownups.
Note: your child does NOT need to be a current therapy client or have a language delay to attend. They are open to ALL children and parents who have an interest in learning how to incorporate books into daily routines.
EACH WEEK:
Introduction of a new story within a lively read aloud experience.
Guided play routine incorporating the thematic story elements (characters, settings, problem, solutions, emotions, etc), providing natural opportunities to practice using vocabulary from the story.
Opportunities to share stories with peers, practicing conversational narrative language skills that help build meaningful friendships.
Age appropriate introduction of social emotional concepts such as patience, empathy, resilience, inclusion, friendship, respect, self-regulation, etc.
Thoughtfully designed handouts for continuing the themed literacy and language activities at home.
Opportunity for question/answer with the SLP during & after the session.
Access to AAC devices for trial during activities.
Socialize with other families during 15 minutes of open play in the sensory gym after the session.
A portion of the proceeds from every book club goes directly towards supporting local access to AAC devices (see “Pay it Forward” for more details about your contribution).

No, the book clubs are not considered individualized speech therapy and are not prescribed for specific children.
Although they are packed full of evidence based strategies for speech and language development, and are a valuable extracurricular activity for children who have communication differences, the clubs are simply a community based resource for children and parents who want to learn more about how to use books in daily routines to support language development.
